Pope Saint John I
The Untold Tale of Pope John: A Diplomatic Mission, Betrayal, and Tragic Imprisonment
A native of Tuscany, John, in his youthful years, embraced the calling of the Roman clergy and ascended to the position of archdeacon. In the year 523, following the demise of St. Hormisdas, he was selected as the Pope. Italy had been under the rule of Theodoric the Goth for approximately three decades. Although Theodoric himself held Arian beliefs, he displayed a measure of tolerance and even favor towards his Catholic subjects during the majority of his reign.
However, during this time, Theodoric's policies underwent a transformation. This change was partly motivated by what he perceived as treacherous correspondence between prominent members of the Roman Senate and Constantinople, and partly due to stringent actions taken against the Arians by Emperor Justin I. Urged by his fellow believers in the East, Theodoric resolved to dispatch an embassy to negotiate with the emperor. To his chagrin, John was appointed as the leader of this mission, and his arrival in Constantinople was met with tremendous enthusiasm. The entire populace flocked to greet him, with Justin at the forefront. On Easter day, John presided over religious ceremonies within the grand cathedral.
Accounts vary regarding the precise contents of the message he conveyed and the manner in which he executed his diplomatic duties. However, it appears that he managed to persuade the emperor to temper his measures against the Arians, for fear that retaliatory actions might be taken against the orthodox community in Italy. Nonetheless, Theodoric's suspicions had been escalating. In the absence of the embassy, he had ordered the execution of the esteemed philosopher St. Severinus Boethius and his father-in-law Symmachus, charging them with the grave offense of high treason. Theodoric seemed to perceive the cordial rapport between the Pope and the emperor as an integral part of a grand conspiracy against him.
No sooner had the mission returned to Ravenna, Theodoric's capital, than Pope John was cast into captivity, where he met his demise within a few short days due to the harsh treatment he endured.
